HER2

A protein that promotes cell growth — overexpressed in some breast and stomach cancers.

What it is

HER2 is a protein that helps control how cells grow. In some cases, this protein is overproduced in certain types of cancer, such as breast and stomach cancer. This means that the cells in these cancers grow and multiply too quickly.

How it works

When HER2 is overproduced, it can send signals to cells to grow and divide more quickly than usual. This can lead to the formation of tumors. In a clinical setting, doctors may use tests to measure the amount of HER2 protein in a tumor to determine the best course of treatment.

Why it matters

Understanding HER2 is important because it can help doctors choose the most effective treatment for patients with certain types of cancer. In some cases, treatments that target the HER2 protein can slow or stop the growth of cancer cells. This can improve treatment outcomes and quality of life for patients.
